Let’s start with the basic color wheel.  It was designed to teach us the relationships of color.  You’ve heard of Designers talk of color schemes and their relationships.  The color wheel helps us with this. 

On the color wheel you’ll see primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) evenly spaced between secondary colors (orange, green and violet).  Then there’s the third or tertiary colors, which mixes the adjacent or analogous colors and lastly the fourth or quaternary colors. 

The most basic color rule is that colors are either warm or cool.  Warm colors advance or pop out while cool colors tend to recede or move away.  Are you drawn to warm colors like reds and yellows?  Or cool colors like blues and greens?  

Warm colors are inviting, comfortable, relaxing and intimate.  Cool colors are refreshing, more reserved, relieves and calms. If you draw a line down the middle of the color wheel, warm and cool colors will be on opposite sides of each other.  Every warm color has a cool compliment.  So how do you decide on your color choice?  Once you’ve narrowed down your selection (and I would add at this point to narrow down your selection to three choices), take the paint chips or samples home.  

Most paint companies now have larger paint chips so that you can experience your color samples effectively.  I take it a step further by purchasing my top three paint colors in the pint size (not gallon size) cans and painting each color on a poster board.  (The paint chips are just not large enough for me.)  I then tape these poster boards on my wall in the room to be painted.  I live with these three colors for a few days… experiencing daylight and nightlight.  You see lighting has a major effect on color.  Both daylight and nightlight will change the look of your color, guaranteed.  So live with your color choices on these poster boards for a few days and then you will know for sure which is the best color for your color scheme. 

Some people ask me if it’s ok to paint accent walls, or to have one or two colors in the same room.  I say absolutely.  Color scheming is not just about choosing colors that you like, but choosing likable, livable colors that produce dramatic effects. 

That’s what accent walls do.  Choose a color that pops, add excitement and works well with the other colors in the room.  You can also switch accent colors from room to room.  There’s really no set rule but you do have to choose livable colors that relate well with the color schemes already around you.  Some colors just don’t work well together, and that’s what you want to avoid. 

That is why paint manufacturers arrange colors sympathetically- in close relationships that enhance each other- in their paint decks (books of paint chips you can purchase from the store).  By fanning the paint deck out, you can choose related colors more easily. 

Now if you don’t like the idea of multiple related color schemes for your home decorating ideas, you can choose to use a whole-house color scheme by sticking to one color.  This one-color continuity scheme can make a small room seem larger and give a sense of harmony and serenity.  One-color schemes called Monochromatic come in two varieties – you can use a single color, or tonal variations of one color.  Monochromatic color schemes are considered very chic and quite contemporary in fashion. 

Most commonly used monochromatic schemes are white and beige but beware – white and beige tend to highlight any flaws.  You want to make sure all your whites and beiges are either cool or warm and inject patterns and textures for added interest.

To make a room look larger- use light, cool colors.  To make a room cozier and inviting, use warm colors. To make a ceiling look higher, use white or light colors. To drop the ceiling and make lower, use darker colors.

Putting your personality into your house is the best way to make it a home. Whether you’re using your own muse or someone else’s put yourself into everything you create at home for a relaxing life experience.

One of the first things I realized about home decorating-after my three thousand or so attempts at making my place look like all the pictures from the magazines-is that home decorating should reflect your personal style. Your home should reflect who you are and what you love.

Of course, I’m not saying that this revelation made me prance around my house with two cans of pink and yellow paint or that I plastered bunnies and butterflies everywhere-and yes, I do actually love pink, yellow, bunnies and butterflies-but I did put a little bit of myself into every room.

I got a certain sense of personal satisfaction from painting my ugly orange countertops a vibrant country red that matched my lust for life and the décor I actually wanted to toss around my kitchen. And my own personal works of art-paintings, photographs, sculptures-are set up around my place as well, giving it just that look of being lived in by somebody who loves and experiences life.

Of course, I recognize that we can’t all spend our evenings splashing around in water colors, or spend our weekends chasing a gaggle of baby quails about the yard trying to take their pictures.

That’s why there are professional designers out there who dedicate their lives to creating home décor that other people can use to express themselves and their individuality. And it’s okay to buy your curtains and blankets if you don’t know how to sew-crafty as I am, I still bought all my curtains and most of my blankets.

Of the things I love most in my home, my furniture doesn’t even come close to counting. It’s the accessories in my home that make it look like I personally live there and that no one else can shake my individuality.

One of my favorite items is a cotton area rug I recently purchased on a trip to the Deep South. This area rug was handmade in mills in the Deep South, where the cotton was picked fresh, milled in a southern mill, cleaned, spun and woven all by the same family of rug makers. When the bed is too hot at night, I frequently sleep on this rug and it makes me feel like I’m back in the Deep South all over again.

I realize that area rugs are not for everyone, but it can be an excellent place to start in learning to develop a personality for your home that meshes with your own personality rather than clashing and making you feel uncomfortable in your own home.

Different types of accessories are truly the way to bring out your personality in your home. Whether it is an area rug, artwork, photographs, drapery, throw pillows or knick knacks that represent different moments in your life, you can always find a way to make yourself feel at home if you just put a little bit of yourself into your own home.

The festive mood remains well active even when the holidays are over. People visit the stores and shops to make full use of post-holiday discounts. Friends and relatives continue to visit your place till the end of January. It takes some time for the world to get back to the conventional track of life after January 1.

Though the calendar is saying that the holidays are over, the fact is: they are not. First few weekend parties in the New Year are going to be rocking! And you still have enough reasons to decorate your home and garden.

For New Year home decoration, write the New Year in figure OR New Year’s Resolutions in the crafts and make them suitable for New Year celebration.

Decorate keeping the occasion in mind:

For Christmas parties, merry red with snowy white looks good. On the other hand, the New Year celebration parties demand a more vibrant and dazzling color scheme – velvety blue, maroon with black, or dark green with golden ornamentation can make your New Year celebration more engaging.

Ask your family members if they have anything to say about the colors of the party. Make the entire session more interactive by engaging all family members in the home decorating process.

Make sure the whole interior is made up to the color scheme you have selected for the season. For Christmas party, choose white upholsteries with red borders, red coasters, and white dinner sets with red ornamentation. Similarly, the upholsteries for sofa and chairs should be chosen appropriately.
